The fifth piece of the Newcastle BTS Diamonds for 2018 was announced last week.

Former Diamond, Carl Wilkinson who has had two previous seasons with Newcastle in 2000 and 2007 returns for his third spell with the club and he’s excited to be back.

“I’m very happy to be back at Newcastle, a track I have always said I would return to. I've fond memories of the last time I was there. It’s also a track that once I'm settled again I think I can really do a good job for the team.”

“As regards how hard the track is to ride? Having been a Diamond before I found it a challenge, but always as an away rider enjoyed coming. I always managed to give the home team a hard time!”

“I'm looking forward to racing the more technical track as my home track and feel for sure will give me a new lease of life.”

Carl refers to a new lease of life and freely admits that 2017 wasn’t his best year in the sport.

“I'm not going to lie 2017 was a challenge. I showed flashes of just how fast I could be with some excellent meetings. But just couldn't get the consistency I wanted. That was down in part to various issues we tried unsuccessfully to work through.”

“As far as 2018 is concerned......I'm physically ready and the bikes are coming on nicely. We tested a lot at the end of the season to get rid of some of the gremlins we had and were happy with the results.”

“I think 2018 is going to be a good year and hopeful the Newcastle fans can see me back to my best putting a show on for them.”

As a veteran of the sport and a long-time Championship rider, Carl knows how important this season is going to be for Newcastle with all the changes behind the scenes.

“It's a big year for the club. New promoter, new sponsors and a bunch of 100% racers in the team. There's action off track and even more action on track this year so hopefully the fans will have plenty to jump around about. A shake up with new riders and fresh ideas in the club can only be a good thing.”

Carl, as we all know, is well used to riding at this level and believes he has a lot to bring and give to Newcastle this season.

“I hopefully bring experience and a level head. Every rider wants to win every race. But my main thought on race day is a team win. I'm a team man through and through if I have to take one for the team then I will.”

“I'm looking forward to whoever I partner in racing really looking out for each other and being part of a happy successful team. I hope personally to make the fans happy with how I'm racing and the promotion. But watch out I think I could surprise a few people along the way.”

“You know what, I might not be everyone’s cup of tea or choice. But I can promise everyone you have a rider in me that's 100% committed to every lap of every race. Also, never be afraid to come and say hi! We're quite chilled in my corner of the pits!”
