Lewis Pleased To Be Back For Five

Lewis Rose is back for his fifth season as a Diamond and it sounds like he's looking forward to it.
It’s been a mightily frustrating start to the 2018 season for all connected with Newcastle Technical Services Diamonds as the weather has intervened and not allowed them to parade their new-look team to the home fans so far.

After the wash-out of both their Press/Practice day and opening Tyne-Tweed Trophy clash with Berwick, The BTS Diamonds arrived in Sheffield last Thursday without any real match-day preparation. The resulting 59 – 31 loss therefore was not really surprising.

However, there were positives for all at Newcastle Speedway not least of which was the way all seven team-members competed and seeing one of those seven, Lewis Rose back in Newcastle colours, many of which were not expecting.

This will be Lewis’s 5th season with the Diamonds and he’s pleased to be back.

“It’s great that I’ve had the opportunity to sign again for the Diamonds. It’s a Club I really enjoy racing for. I’m very much looking forward to getting back up to Newcastle as I love the track there and riding for a great promotion and set of fans.”

Lewis’s last two seasons have been cruelly curtailed due to successive shoulder injuries but he’s happy to report a return to full fitness.

“The shoulder’s good, I've trained real hard this winter since December with Kings Lynn training camps run by Paul Sugget, Chris Neville and others an I’ve also been able to get a lot of Moto-X in so all’s good.”

Lewis has signed to a Polish squad this season and will also be doubling up in the Premiership with King Lynn again this season which looks like being a busy one for him.

“Yeah, I’m doubling up again now which I wasn't planning on too as being injured 3 seasons in a row in the Championship meant I wanted to try something different this year. That’s why I signed up to ride in Poland, but I know that’s a squad system and opportunities will be limited.”

“So, when Newcastle asked me I ended up doing a late deal with them which I was happy with and hopefully we will have a good time there. I’m just going to enjoy it and try not to worry about points and all that goes with it. If I enjoy it then the points will pile in.”

A lot has been said about the make-up of the Diamonds team this season and many are saying it’ll be a season of struggle for the Tyneside septet. That result at Sheffield probably harden those views, but Rose does not agree.

“Sheffield is always a really tough place to go and to go there with a new team and no practice just made it harder. I think we competed well despite the score and certainly the laps together will help us get going.”

“I think the Diamonds team looks good. I think it's consistent all the way through and we all get on, so it will be a fun year. I don't think finishing last will be the case at all.”

“Last year the team was really strong at the top end and Newcastle didn't do how we all expected so I think they are also trying something different which will pay off in the long run I'm sure.”

For Lewis though after so many setbacks, his personal ambitions for 2018 are very simple.

“I've got my own goals to achieve but mostly they are to have fun riding, enjoy it, stay injury-free and everything will hopefully come together. That would be a successful season for me.”
