In the second half of Sunday's match vs. Ipswich, the Newcastle Gems took on the Bob Hughes Select Wasps in a challenge fixture, but come Heat Three, the match came to a sudden halt.
The third Heat saw Josh Embleton well out in front with his fellow Gem Dale Pate in second followed by Douglas but on the second bend Pate went down heavily with the chasing Douglas unable to avoid the fallen machine, hitting it mid-ships and going head-over-heels over the top and heavily onto the track.

With the Medical staff fully on Douglas' case the event was abandoned as they prepared to get the Gem to hospital where it became apparent he would be out of action for a significant length of time.

In Dean's own Facebook statement a day or two later he stated: "Well after further x-rays today I have a cracked humerus bone in my left arm, and also I’ve broken two bones in my left foot as well as the heel bone. Back up the hospital in two weeks to see how it’s healing, then they’ll decided if I need the cast on for another four weeks of just a moon boot, then it looks like three month off the bike, I would like to say thank you to everyone for there messages, also couldn’t thank my family and friends enough for there help."

Everyone at Newcastle Speedway wishes Dean a rapid recovery.
