On a night where the "BTS" Diamonds could only celebrate on heat advantage - the 5-1 in Heat 15 pictured above - there was little else to get excited about for the Tyneside fans apart from looking forward to serving out some revenge tonight at Brough when Berwick come back in the league.
Despite four of the six Diamonds on show being former Bandits, it was an uphill struggle from the off with the usually rock-solid reliable Ashley Morris having a Devil of a night, retiring from three races and falling heavily in his second left the double-figure king floundering with one point - so out of character.

Matty Wethers revelled in his former home surroundings - until he and David Howe became locked together on the second lap's first bend of Heat Nine, the Diamond's reserve, tangled in both bikes skidding towards the fence, missing the re-run, and looking a tad second-hand afterwards.

Tero Aarnio wasn't nicknamed "The Hero" when he was a Bandits for nothing, and his tenacious racing at Shielfield Park last night reminded everyone why with his excellent 11 points, which could have been more had it not been for an engine failure in his opening outing. His wins were solid and authoritative and was the key-stone of the Diamonds without doubt.

Nico Covatti was a fine guest taking 10+1 and will be a welcome guest again tonight back home at Brough Park at 6.30pm for the return fixture, which may not be quite as easy as hoped as Kevin Doolan and David Howe make their third appearance in three weeks at the Byker circuit, Theo Pijper also rode there last week for Redcar before being dropped by the Bears and taken up by the Bandits, while Aaron Summers rode superbly well in the Tyne/Tweed Trophy second leg just two weeks ago. The Bandits will be concerned at Dany Gappmaier's continually poor Brough Park form, meaning it's likely to be a seriously tight match with more great racing.

Generous Tero Aarnio, who represents Finland on Tuesday at the National Speedway Stadium at Belle Vue has donated two top priced grandstand tickets for the event and a pair of pit passes too which will be raffled tonight as a separate venture to the usual key draw.

Tickets on sale tonight with the draw during the meeting for a pair of lucky fans to enjoy a speedway night to remember. Cheers Tero!!!
