The Newcastle "Boiler Technical Services" Diamonds took a 54-36 victory over Sheffield in last night's Championship clash.

The Newcastle "Boiler Technical Services" Diamonds had to ride last night's SBG Championship league match at Brough Park against the Sheffield Tigers without the top-scoring Finn, Tero Aarnio against the South Yorkshire side who had made two changes to their side, dropping Jan Graversen and Jack Smith in favour of new American star, Broc Nicol and young Brit Georgie Wood.

In the Shield back in April, the Diamonds won on Tyneside 53-37 and are keen to impress they have the upper hand despite being beaten at Owlerton by 59-31, so as Heat One lined up it was all to play for, and it was looking like a home 4-2 before Kyle Howarth spun out of control on the third bend to fall with Todd Kurtz laying down at speed with Howarth's exclusion from the re-run.

Ludvig Lindgren and Carl Wilkinson made light work of the restart to take a maximum 5-1 before Georgie Wood went down on the third bend of the third lap of Heat Two causing the race to be stopped and awarded a home 4-2 extending Newcastle's lead to 9-3, which progressed to 16-8 after Heat Four won by Charles Wright well from the gate after the heat had to be recalled for an over-enthusiastic start first time out.

Howarth was then withdrawn with a shoulder injury as Injury Rider Replacement was used to cover his last three rides, and Wright, drafted in as such in Heat Five won the heat in fine style as part of a 2-4, Ashley Morris splitting the pair as Lasse Bjerre passed Matej Kus off bend three before the Czech retired when at the back as Sheffield hauled two points back.

Lindgren and Wethers hit a hard 5-1 in the Sixth over Wright before Robson made a superb couple of bends to soar away and win the seventh, which ended a 4-2 to the Diamonds taking the score to 27-15, however Wright and Shanes shot away to take a solid 1-5 over Morris and a fading Kus to close the gap to 31-23.

Nicol looked to be getting to grips with Brough Park in Heat 10 until he went down on the third bend of the second lap to be excluded and he heat awarded a win for Lindgren over Bjerre and Morris in a 4-2 to again push Newcastle further ahead to 10 points, and after a home maximum to Robson and Wilkinson in Heat 11, the 12th was brought to a sudden halt as Shanes seemed to hit the inside kerb and slump in a heap.

This resulted in his exclusion from the three-man re-run in which Bjerre took a fine win in a shared 3-3 to seal a win for Newcastle as the 43-29 score line put the Diamonds far enough ahead with three to go.

Team manager for the Diamonds, co-owner/promoter Martin Phillips said: "So they changed their team and we took them for two points more that April, which gave us all league points tonight which was always the aim. I have to acknowledge that had they not been unfortunate enough to lose Kyle Howarth in the Heat One fall, then it would have been a lot closer, but this club this year is pulling as a single unit and all again took one win or paid win at least so what more can we ask, and that was without Tero Aarnio to boot!"
