The Newcastle "BTS" Diamonds are in action on Saturday and Sunday in two SGB Championship league encounters, at the Workington Cometson Saturday with an earlier 6.30pm start time as it's a double-header in Cumbria with the Redcar Bears on after the Diamonds' clash, then its back to Brough Park on Sunday with the usual 6.30pm tapes-up when the Scunthorpe Scorpions are the visitors.

The Comets are on 30 points in the current table, three places, but only two points behind the fourth play-off place in which the Lakeside Hammers reside at present while the Diamonds are in eighth place, six points adrift of Workington, but desperately keen to make up for some generally poor away performance.

Newcastle's team manager George English knows he has a team capable of wins, saying: "The odds are obviously stacked against us tonight in Cumbria, but we have a team that, if it fires collectively, can get results - just ask Sheffield!

"However we are at the moment without Ashley Morris who suffered a particularly bad crash racing for Wolverhampton recently and had been struggling ever since, most notably with an unusually subdued meeting at Glasgow after which I told him to get himself to hospital and get checked over, especially for his agonising ribs which was certainly effecting his riding.

"After a day at hospital this week he was told the good news there were no breaks, however he has been strenuously advised to rest up and allow his body some quality recovery time and therefore we will be using the rider-replacement rule to cover him this weekend."

With the Diamonds to return to Derwent Park again before too soon in the Knockout Cup, with a 10-point deficit to overturn, they will be keen to make the most of Saturday's league battle to dial into the track and maybe make a good start for the cup when it comes, howeve on Sunday the Scorpions bring a familiar challenge with former Newcastle number one, Steve Worrall leading their charge.

They also boast Jason Garrity, Jake Allen and freshly back from injury, Josh Auty in their side, all of whom are more that capable of making Sunday a top class meeting to remember.
