BTS Diamonds battle Berwick in the Cup this weekend
Friday 31st May 2019, 20:20 UK
LAWRENCE HEPPELL
Championship Knockout Cup fever arrives in the North East this weekend as Berwick Bandits lock horns with the Newcastle BTS Diamonds in the event's quarter final home and away this weekend.

Saturday at 7pm the focus is on North Northumberland as Berwick play hosts but will be without their inspirational captain, Kevin Doolan who fell heavily at Eastbourne last weekend and is sitting out a compulsory time on the side lines which covers both Cup legs and on Saturday the home side will use rider replacement to cover his absence.

Bandits' team boss, Gary Flint said: "Without Kevin and his influence, it leave a big hole in our side's spirit, but the other guys will simply try that bit harder to get the result we need to make sure our skipper is happy with the performance we put in.

"Newcastle have made a team change this week, and it could on paper make them a stronger prospect at Shielfield, but we know a big lead on Saturday is vital to get through to the semi finals and will be going all out!"

Newcastle host the second and deciding leg on Sunday at Brough Park with the usual 6.30pm start time where Berwick will bring Glasgow's Paul Starke of Glasgow as a guest for the missing Doolan, while Newcastle team manager George English is keen to see his new boy on home shale for his home debut.

"We welcome Jacob Bukhave as our third Dane for this weekend," said English, "and think he's going to do a good job for us home and away, giving us the edge we need to push for success. In our early season friendly matches with the Bandits we won on aggregate by only two points, so we know this cup tie is going to be a hard battle which could easily go down to Heat 15 on Sunday in Byker to get a final result!"

Berwick Aaron Summers, Coty Garcia, Dany Gappmaier, Jye Etheridge, Kevin Doolan (Rider replacement tonight - Paul Starke Guest tomorrow), Leon Flint, Nikolaj Busk Jakobsen
