Triumphant in the Shield in Byker and dismantled in the Cup on the same Tyneside track and septet of Newcastle "Boiler Technical Services" Diamonds, the Berwick "Mike Hope of Wooler Ltd." Bandits (Powered by Clear Energy Consulting) returned to the scene of their most rollercoaster of tracks to take on the Diamonds, last night for league points, but after a good start, the visitor's challenge

It was indeed a revived set of Bandits who took a 1-5 in Heat One with Aaron Summers roaring away from the gate to win in a stunning time of 62.6 seconds, as Jye Etheridge took a good second over Steve Worrall, but Newcastle leapfrogged over the Bandits in two heats as Danny Phillips took the Heat Two win over Coty Garcia in a 4-2, as Lasse Bjerre and Matthew Wethers managed a home 5-1 over an uncharacteristically sluggish Kevin Doolan who was left at the gate in a 3-3 that took the scores to 10-8.

Summers took a second win in the fourth well over Thomas Jorgensen and Philips who passed Flint after the Berwick teen ended up too wide off bend four losing a lot of ground, with the score now 13-11, while Heat Two second placer was excluded from Heat Five after touching he tape with Garcia coming in to replace, and in the re-run, his machine seized off the gate leaving Summers to take his third win over Lasse Bjerre and Matty Wethers in a 3-3.

Following a Heat Five share, Worrall and Clegg made no errors taking a huge home 5-1 in Heat Six over Etheridge, however Berwick bounced back leading Heat Seven from gate to flag despite a good challenge in third from Jorgensen early on with the 1-5 taking the scores to 22-20.

Wethers rode a brilliant Heat Nine to pass Doolan on the first bend of the second lap, and Bjerre also took a pass round Garcia on lap three for home 4-2 moving the scores on to 29-25 while a solid gate from Worrall in Heat 10 after a tight first bend with Doolan in the home 4-2 pushing Newcastle two more points ahead to 33-27.

Summers missed the Heat 11 gate completely and ended at the back as Jorgensen flew off to win well, but the Bandit's number one passed Bukhave down the back straight to take third in the 3-3 before Bjerre made a brilliant pass of Garcia in Heat 12 to lead well off lap three in the shared 3-3 maintaining the six point gap at 39-33.

Worrall made the best gate in Heat 13 ahead of Summers a Jorgensen squeezed up off bend two to form a vital Newcastle maximum to take the score to 44-34, clinching Diamonds' win on the night with only eight recovery points left to the Bandits who were 10 points behind.

George English said: "This was a fair meeting for both sides as they both rode closer to their normal strengths, but our lads pushed that bit harder when it was needed to take the crucial points and take a deserved win."

Berwick's Gary Flint then added: "Well, we certainly did better here than that Cup, thankfully, but we just ran out of steam later on despite a good early effort. I think we honestly deserved the bonus league point, but that too went out of reach at the end, which would have been some consolation."
