A match built up as a tough ask for the Newcastle Diamonds saw them lead the Scunthorpe Scorpions at Brough Park last night by 16-8 after four races, the fourth which saw Thomas Jorgensen fly off to win, but in second Danny Philips confounded his critics to battle hard with Jake Allen and former Diamond Simon Lambert, riding hard for his two points in the home maximum 5-1.

Danny Ayres made a very fast gate in Heat Five to lead well into the first bend, a lead he extended throughout well ahead of Matthew Wethers for an away 2-4, however with Steve Worrall and Max Clegg in Heat Six against Allen and Ryan Kinsley, big things were expected but the two Diamonds got too close on bend one with Clegg falling, and all four called back by the referee.

After Clegg had a good clean-up in the pits Heat Six came back to the tapes, and this time is was the Diamond-duo who struck gold with a solid 5-1 taking the score to 23-13, and putting the Scorpions in tactical substitute territory, but not used in Heat Seven which saw Barker take an awarded three over Bukhave and Jorgensen as Lambert fell at the end of the second lap causing the stoppage and an awarded result.

Their tactical substitute came in Heat Nine saw Barker in for Kinsley, and Barker led for two laps until Wethers flew round him at speed going into the third lap to secure a 3-3 nullifying the tac. sub. and maintaining the gap at 10 points which went up to 12 after a solid Worrall win in Heat 10 over busy Barker in a 4-2 taking the score to 36-24.

The Heat 12 2-4, won well by Baker after passing Wethers in a cracking battle, but with the scores now 42-30 Scunthorpe had to win the final three races at 5-1 to force a draw, but it was Worrall who made the gate to hit the front followed by Jorgensen over Auty to take a match winning 5-1 home maximum.

Team Manager George English said: "We're pulling as a unit as we should now and getting the good results we deserve, and that tonight was with our sick number Three, Lasse Bjerre who we wish well for a speedy recovery."
