The Newcastle Diamonds have made a change to their line-up as they head to Scotland tonight for the first leg of the SGB Knockout Cup Semi-Final at the Armadale Stadium against the Edinburgh Monarchs on Friday night.

Ulrich Ostergaard, only released by Redcar on Tuesday, comes in for the unfortunate Jacob Bukhave. Explaining the decision, George English said: “I feel extremely sorry for Jacob who has been a pleasure to work with in the short spell that he was with us. Initially he was brought in on a 28-day trial and it’s one that has worked for both parties but he is yet another rider who can count himself very unlucky to lose his place due to restrictions placed on clubs in terms of points limits. I hope someone else will be able to offer Jacob a place soon as he deserves a decent run in a team.

"However the opportunity arose to bring in Ulrich, and we felt it was one that we couldn’t miss out on, particularly with such a big weekend coming up and the problems we face with putting out a team for those matches.”

The change also means Max Clegg, who has ridden exceptionally well at number two, drops back down to reserve for the rest of this month, at least, giving the powerful reserve a potential seven rides a meeting.

However the Diamonds also go to Armadale without both Thomas Jorgensen (shoulder injury) and Lasse Bjerre (sitting out an illness suspension), so the Diamonds have called on Berwick’s Argentinian, Coty Garcia as a guest for Bjerre and will use Rider Replacement for Jorgensen, although the former will, ironically, be at Armadale supporting his team-mates, as he had already booked his flights before being taken ill.

The Monarchs will welcome Josh Pickering back into the team, as he has declared himself fit after a recent shoulder injury, they are also relieved that Ricky Wells has also declared himself fit, after having to withdraw from Monday night’s meeting for Poole at King’s Lynn, the irony being Jorgensen had to withdraw from the same meeting, both with shoulder problems.

Wells said last night: “I couldn't cope with the really grippy track at King's Lynn and had severe pain in my shoulder. I've been to the physio today and I feel much better. I'll be OK for Friday night match against Newcastle."

The last meeting between the two sides saw the Monarchs run out 51-39 winners, with Jorgensen top scoring for the Diamonds on 13 points. Steve Worrall will be hoping to get more than the six he got back in April and Matthew Wethers, who really is flying at the moment, will be hoping the same as he managed just five. Clegg took a good 8+1 from reserve, with Danny Phillips chipping in with a point, beating former Diamond, William Lawson in Heat Two. On his last visit for Redcar, Ostergaard scored five points.

The Diamonds will be hoping to keep it as close as possible, to give them every chance of progressing through to the Final, the deciding leg at Brough Park on Sunday at 6.30pm.
