Newcastle's BTS Diamonds opened up their Cup Semi challenge last night at the Edinburgh Monarchs in their most important match of the season to date, and with Sunday's Byker based deciding leg coming up tomorrow at 6.30pm, the aim was to keep the Monarchs close, and take a win if possible.

Without Thomas Jorgensen (injury) and Lasse Bjerre (illness) Coty Garcia of Berwick was drafted in as guest and came out in Heat One which looked like a nailed-on 5-1 to the Monarchs until Victor Palovaara made a huge error sending him to the rear as Ricky Wells took the win, as Steve Worrall took second ahead of the guest in a shared 3-3.

Diamonds' reserve Max Clegg rode a superb Heat Two to win ahead of a forceful William Lawson, taking the progressives to 6-6, however Joel Andersson made a solid gates in Heat Three and was soon joined up front by Josh Pickering who worked hard from last to win and leave Matthew Wethers and Garcia looking for inspiration at the rear with the 5-1 putting Edinburgh four points up.

Worrall led the fifth from gate to flag to nab his three points, and with Wethers holding Andersson at the back the Newcastle 2-4 narrowed the gap slightly to 17-13 only for Wells and Palovaara to roast the starting grid and hammer home a huge 5-1 over Clegg and Newcastle's new Dane Ulrich Ostergaard with the score now 22-14.

Wethers and Cameron Heeps had a ding-dong up front in Heat Seven with the Diamond taking the win, as Lawson roared up behind Garcia to sneak third on the finish line to share the race and maintain the home lead to eight points, while another win for Worrall in the eighth having been pushed all the way by Palovaara in another 3-3 result.

Clegg took Heat Nine well with Ostergaard taking third behind Pickering in a 2-4, but that was instantly negated with a home 4-2 coming from Wells taking his third heat win over Wethers who held Palovaara in check with the scores still separated by eight points at 34-26.

Clegg was back in as rider replacement for the 11th race, however while Clegg and Worrall were looking set for the maximum five points, Heeps rode round the pair to split the spoils keeping the deficit at eight point for Newcastle with four heats of the first leg left to run, but a Monarchs' 5-1 from Pickering and Lawson over Garcia and Clegg didn't help the cause with the score now 42-30.

Heeps relegated Ostergaard and Worrall into the minor placings in Heat 13's 3-3 as Wells made a hash of he gate and finished last, while Andersson held Clegg into second in a home 4-2 to put 14 points between the sides, which remained the same after a final heat 3-3.

"Once again the lads held their own pretty well early on tonight," said George English, Newcastle's manager, "but with the old bugbear of too many last places, Edinburgh slotted in far more points between us and them than we would ever have liked, but we have the deciding leg tomorrow at Brough, and out lads want a final, so Edinburgh will have a real fight on their hands."
