The Newcastle "Boiler Technical Services" Diamonds raced for Championship league points at the Redcar Bears last night and after a shared Heat One, the travellers from Byker took an early lead in Heat Two, won well from the gate by Max Clegg as Nathan Greaves and Danny Phillips battled hard behind with the Redcar man nicking second in Newcastle's 2-4, putting them ahead 5-7.

However it was the Bears who were two-up after the third race, an easy 5-1 for Jordan Stewart and Michael Palm Toft over Lasse Bjerre and Matthew Wethers, extended to four points, 14-10 after Heat Fours' 4-2 won by Charles Wright as Thomas Jorgensen cut hard back and under Greaves to take second place.

Both Heat's five and six saw Redcar hit maximum 5-1s into the net followed by a shared heat seven to take the scores on to 27-15 before Newcastle fans could cheer on Ulrich Ostergaard to a Heat Eight victory despite being pushed hard by Kasper Andersson all the way in another share of the spoils while Jorgensen's superb gate to flag win in Heat Nine ahead of Palm Toft who passed Clegg at the end of the opening lap, put a 2-4 into the equation narrowing the gap to 10 points again.

Following another shared of points in Heat 10, won by Erik Riss, the eleventh ended up similarly with Wright taking the three points over the hard chasing Steve Worrall and Ostergaard, with the 12th also split 3-3, Palm Toft taking victory ahead of Bjerre and Clegg having passed the Diamonds' pair in the first three laps of the race with the score now 41-31 with three races to go.

The Diamonds needed to end the match with three maximum 1-5s to pull off a slender victory, but with Jorgensen retiring from Heat 13 on lap three and Worrall unable to make an impression in third on second placed Riss and winner Wright, the deal was done and Redcar celebrated victory with two races to run.

Team manager for the night, Martin Phillips said: "As has been our downfall this season, we can't get everyone firing at full power all at once, and if all the lads were we'd be having some great wins to look back on, but again tonight the home side were just too strong for us and deserved their victory."
