Its been a long time coming but the Newcastle "Boiler Technical Services" Diamonds finally won an SGB Championship league point by restricting their defeat at Sheffield to six points in a tough tug-o-war battle last night at Owlerton Stadium.

Steve Worrall stormed Heat One leaving the chasing Daniel King in his wake as Josh MacDonald held Max Clegg at the read in a shared opening soiree before home reserves Broc Nicol and Zaine Kennedy held off a massive challenge from Ulrich Ostergaard in third as Danny Phillips found his 15 metre handicap for a tapes infringement too much to overcome as he home side led 8-4.

After four Newcastle trailed by 10 points, but they drafted in Lasse Bjerre, the former Sheffield star, in as a tactical substitute for Clegg in Heat Five, and he and Worrall took advantage of Justin Sedgmen taking a wildly too-wide run on the third bend as the Newcastle captain whipped up his inside to lead and he was joined by Bjerre on the third lap in the Diamonds' 1-5 to take the score to 18-12.

The big push continued in the sixth with Thomas Jorgensen and Ostergaard taking up the lead in determined fashion over King for a second away maximum, and now Newcastle trailed by only two points, although Jake Allen and Kennedy engaged with Jorgensen and Bjerre in the race of the season in Heat Seven with masses of passing from start to finish with the home side taking the five points, but in the process Jorgensen had damaged a shoulder and was subsequently withdrawn as the scores moved on to 24-18.

Ostergaard took another great win in the eighth, but with Clegg stuck at the rear the heat was shared, as was the ninth with yet another Ostergaard win over Todd Kurtz with Sheffield now leading 30-24, as Bjerre continued the Diamonds' wins by taking Heat 10 comfortably over King in a further share of the spoils.

Allen led Heat 11 and won well over Ostergaard and Worrall, although the Newcastle skipper had to regain third after Kennedy had passed him on lap one, but again the 3-3 split left the gap at six points.

Heat 13 was a hammer-blow for Newcastle as Allen and King made a pair of jet-propelled gates to leave Worrall and Phillips (in for the injured Jorgensen) with too much catch-up to play in a vital 5-1 again putting 10 points between the sides, 44-34, but Bjerre and Ostergaard did likewise in Heat 14 over Kennedy and Kurtz, and with the score sitting at 45-39 the game was over, but that bonus league point was still in reach.

Bjerre completed his best night of the season with another barnstorming win blasting wide to pass the whole field on bend two to take up a massive lead for an odds-on three points but King and Allen were too tight to let Worrall in for a bite of the cherry in a 3-3 that sealed one league point for the Diamonds with the final score set at 48-42.

Team manager George English said: "Lasse was a revelation tonight and the fact he was racing as his 2018 club probably helped, and we certainly benefited. Ulrich too was in blistering form and really lifted our spirits tonight. Losing Thomas early on was a massive blow to us and that probably scuppered that win but we did take one league point, and while it could have been more, we have at last broken our away duck."
