Newcastle Diamonds v Sheffield Tigers
Sunday 15th October 2017, 22:46 UK
While the visitors to the Newcastle Diamonds, last night, the Sheffield Tigers had already won the SGB Championship, the Byker side had pride at stake to prove they are still a side that should have been up there with the best challenging for honours, and they did it in style taking a brilliant 16-point victory

With Robert Lambert back - unexpectedly early - from his Polish leg injury and taking his number one jacket, the Diamonds were back to full strength and raring to go with Lambert going in Heat One against the seven-times British Champion, Scott Nicholls who was guesting for the Tigers' injured number one, Josh Grajczonek, and it was a cracking opener with Lambert swooping round Nichols only for the veteran to fly back round Lambert off bend three in a shared 3-3.

Newcastle took the lead after a superb Heat Three 5-1 from skipper Ludvig Lindgren and Stuart Robson well over the Tigers' guest, Ty Proctor to take the score to 11-7 before Steve Worrall blasted away to lead and win Heat Four over Lasse Bjerre as Alfie Bowtell rode well for a third placed point over Jan Graversen for a home 4-2.

Lindgren and Robson made the perfect pair of gates at the start of Heat Five to blast away from Nicholls, who hit the ga hard and made up a load of ground, but not enough to get up with the Diamonds who won a very unexpected maximum taking the score to 20-10, and with yet another 5-1 coming in Heat Six from Lambert and Ashley Morris over Graversen and Bjerre put the Diamonds an astonishing 14 points ahead.

A Tigers' 2-4 was reversed in Heat Nine with a big controlled win from Morris as Bowtell battled hard with Todd Kurtz until the Tiger fell on the first bend of the second lap, but come the ninth race, Bjerre was nominated as a tactical ride for double points and battled well with Lindgren and Robson, initially leading until Newcastle's skipper soared round him off the fourth bend to seal the three points in a shared 4-4 moving the score on to 35-21.

Newcastle's charge roared on with another fine win from Lambert well over Proctor in Heat 10 as part of another 4-2, pushing their lead to 16 points followed by a fast win for Worrall ahead of Nicholls in a shared 3-3 that sealed victory on the night for the Diamonds, who at least proved the point they were better than the league position suggested.

Team manager George English said: "That was a good win for us over the team that won the league just a week or two ago and we're delighted with that result as the lads all dug deep and got good points, including from young Alfie who had some decent battles, so yes - satisfactory and the rest - we're not a bad team! Next week we have the final hurrah with our double header."
