Sunday 15th April 2018, 22:34 UK
Diamonds blew off the cobwebs in tight win over Scunthorpe on Sunday night, their first of the season thanks to the poor weather.

SGB Championship Shield Group Phase

The Newcastle "Boiler Technical Services" Diamonds finally opened their 2018 home doors with a Championship Shield clash with the Scunthorpe Scorpions at a cold and misty Brough park that went virtually to the last hurrah.

Two 4-2s to the Diamonds opened up proceedings very nicely and with a win for Lewis Rose in the third well over Josh Auty and Jake Allen the score after three was 11-7, but until the last bend of the last lap of Heat Four it looked like a Scorpions' 1-5 when Gino Manzares' machine ground to a halt allowing the chasing riders through to turn it into a 3-3 taking the score to 14-10.

A great race in Heat Six saw Tero Aarnio make a great gate and led well for virtually the whole race until Jason Garrity found he power to zip round him off the last bend of the race, and with Lindgren changing positions at the back with tactical Substitute Auty, a visitors' 2-4 was recorded and the score moved on to 20-16.

Stuart Robson recovered well from his first outing third to shoot away and win Heat Seven well over Allen in a shared 3-3, while Heat Eight came to a sharp end when Nielsen clattered into the second bend fence, following a great battle with Aarnio and Morris who were awarded the first maximum 5-1 heat win extending the home lead to eight points.

Danny Phillips was excluded from the re-run of Heat Nine when he and Rose clashed on the third bend with both hitting the track hard, but thankfully both ok, at the second attempt, Garrity shot away and led by half a lap two laps in for a shared 3-3, taking the score to 31-23.

Points were shared again in the 10th, won by Auty, but Kerr's fine from the gate win in Heat 11 as Nielsen kept Robson at the rear, the 2-4 narrowed Newcastle's lead to 36-30, while Auty destroyed Heat 12 in another shared race leaving the match on a knife edge with three races remaining.

Heat 13 saw the side's two top men line up, Lindgren led from the gate with Garrity ferociously chasing him off bend two but the Newcastle Swede held his lines through the heat and took a great win as Kerr retired from the race for a home 4-2 extending the lead again to eight points and it later transpired that Garrity's throttle had jammed open for the last two laps.

Needing two 1-5s to draw the match, Scorpions' Allan and Manzares led Heat 14 early on but off bend two Wethers whipped past Allen to take the critical second place that won the match for Newcastle.

Team manager George English said: "The lads knuckled down well tonight and wanted that win above all else, and all put in some good moments and tool good vital points. Considering our time off and no practice on our home track, this was the first time we'd ridden on our own shale since last season, I think this result was a good one and proves we're better than most people think."
