Scunthorpe Scorpions v Newcastle Diamonds
Friday 8th June 2018, 21:37 UK
A night long-awaited by the Newcastle Diamonds with their trip to the Scunthorpe Scorpions in the SGB Championship heralding the match they were back at full-strength for the first time in a good number of weeks with Stuart Robson back from injury and Matej Kus making his 2018 debut for his parent club, ended in last heat heart-break due to an Aarnio puncture.

Skipper Ludvig Lindgren lined up with Robson against Kyle Howarth, Scunthorpe's guest and Danny Phillips, and it was the home guest who roared away for the win in a shared 3-3 as Robson eased back into the game with a good second place, looking like he had never been away, but better was to cone when Mathew Wethers and Carl Wilkinson left Phillips and the Scorpions' other guest, Todd Kurtz, scrambling for the third place point in a Diamonds' 1-5, putting the Byker side 4-8 ahead.

Jake Allen took the third heat over Matej Kus, but the Diamonds' returnee made him work hard for his points, as Ashley Morris found himself behind Josh Auty in a home 4-2 halving the Newcastle lead, but Scunthorpe went ahead 13-11 after Heat Four which saw Tero Aarnio battle hard with Jason Garrity and Todd Kurtz, to no avail with the Scorpions taking a 5-1 result as Allen and Auty did in the fifth over Lindgren and Robson widening the home lead to six points.

Garrity and Aarnio locked horns again in a fine Heat Six, the Scorpion taking the three points as Wilkinson ended up at the back , the 4-2 took the score to 22-14, but Morris found his mojo again and blasted away to take a great Heat Seven victory, backed up well by Kus for a vital Diamonds' maximum, reducing the deficit to four again.

After Allen beat Robson to the flag in Heat Eight for a home 4-2, Aarnio finally got the reward he deserved with a solid win in the ninth, but with Morris' inconsistent night continuing, that was held at a 3-3 share, but Morris took an all-important third over Kurtz in Heat 10 as Kus expertly relegated Howarth to second in a Newcastle 4-2 that again reduced the gap to four points with five heats to go.

The great effort continued in Heat 11 as Robson excelled and soared round Garrity to lead and win well with Lindgren in third to reduce the catch-up to only two points, but Auty and Kurtz made sure Kus and Wilkinson weren't allowed to capitalise on this with another home maximum for a 39-33 tally, with three races to go.

Aarnio took another fine win in the shared 13th race as Newcastle needed two 1-5s to take a narrow win, however with Wilkinson chasing hard along with Morris, neither could stop Allen taking the match-winning three points in Heat 14 taking the score beyond Newcastle's reach, 45-39.

In the last heat Aarnio was leading well, and looking like taking one league point, bad luck struck as his rear tyre punctured sending him to the back, and the lucky home 5-1, despite good chasing from Kus in third all over the Scorpions' exhausts, took all the Diamonds' points away.

Team manager George English said: "We put in a decently spirited performance tonight and while we didn't get the win six of our seven lads got wins or paid wins, and on an away track that still highlights a good strength-in-depth core that could reap deserved rewards in our remaining matches this season. We really deserved a point at least tonight had had it not been for that confounded puncture hitting Tero in Heat 15 we would have got our just deserts, but it was good to see Stuart Robson back on a bike and to be honest looking like he had never been off one for so long! "
