Newcastle Diamonds v Edinburgh Monarchs
Sunday 17th June 2018, 23:11 UK
The win against the Edinburgh Monarchs last night at Brough Park saw the Newcastle Diamonds rise to fifth place in the SGB Championship league table, and before the match spirits were high as the Byker-based side had only just missed out on a win at Edinburgh on Friday night, so it was all to play for in what turned out to be the best match of the year so far with thrilling racing rippling through the 15 heats.

A great opening heat saw all four riders hit the first bend shoulder to shoulder with Stuart Robson whipping up the speed to take up the lead as Ludvig Lindgren overhauled Joel Andersson before diving under Ricky Wells off bend four of lap two to hit a great 5-1.

With Newcastle 12-up after Heat Three, the fourth came to a dramatic halt when Erik Riss, chasing Tero Aarnio, spun alarmingly on the third bend, being flung face-first into the track surface needing medical attention as the referee excluded him from the re-run, in which Aarnio again shot to the front ahead of Matthew Wethers in a fine home 5-1, putting the Diamonds 10 ahead.

News came through that Erik Riss had been withdrawn with Injury Rider Replacement to cover his remaining three rides, as his brother Mark did in Heat Six, which saw Lindgren and Robson combine up front to take a tight and solid 5-1 taking the score to 25-11.

Aarnio had to ride his socks off in Heat Seven to fend off the huge effort behind from Josh Pickering for the win with Wilkinson Passing Riss for a home 4-2, bettered again in Heat Eight with an untouchable Robson/Wethers maximum over Andersson to extend Newcastle's lead to 34-14.

Using a tactical substitute in the form of Wells for Garcia and Andersson as the IRR, Edinburgh managed to sneak a 2-4 despite the fine efforts of Morris off the final bend, while in Heat 10 Pickering rode the best race of his night to round Robson and lead well to share the heat 3-3 with the score now 39-21.

Edinburgh fought back in Heat 11 as Wells and Andersson rode hard to lead off bend two but Wilkinson got right up along side Andersson on the second lap, but the 1-5 narrowed the Diamonds' lead to 14 points again with four heats to go before Pickering and Kus battled all Heat 12, passing and repassing with the Monarch taking the spoils in a shared heat.

A 3-3 in the 13th, won by Wells over Lindgren and Aarnio who passed Pickering on the last lap, coupled with a 5-1 in Heat 14 from Morris and Wilkinson over Ruml, sealed a good win for Newcastle with the score 51-33 with one to go, which in itself was an incredible heat won by Wells.

Team manager George English said " Very satisfactory tonight with some great racing from our lads against an Edinburgh side which put in some superb races with Josh Pickering looking particularly impressive. Great match, and typical of our matches with the Monarchs, so to win by a solid 16 points - with solid scoring through our team again, was just desserts."
