Newcastle, by contrast were at full strength, and in Heat One it was Bach who shot from the gate to take a solid win over Stuart Robson and Ludvig Lindgren in the shared heat, however after a Heat Two share, Bach was challenging for the lead behind Matej Kus when the Comet's number one spun hard on the third bend and fell into the air fence with his exclusion from the re-run which ended a great 5-1 from Kus and Morris over Dan Bewley.

Good news from the pits came that Bach was uninjured after his fall, but on track Rasmus Jensen and Nicolai Klindt powered up for a Comets with a 1-5 of their own over Matty Wethers and Tero Aarnio to level the match again at 12-12, before Newcastle went two ahead after a superb pass from Kus round Bach on bend two to form a good 4-2 with Morris in third.

Klindt led Heat Seven well but behind Bewley first flew round Wilkinson and then Aarnio a lap later for a match-leading maximum with the score now 20-22, as Jensen soared round both Lindgren and Wethers in Heat Eight to tie the heat 3-3 and preserve he visitor's lead.

Kus and Morris excelled in Heat Nine to take the five over Klindt, but an awarded 1-5 in Heat 10 after leader Stuart Robson came to an abrupt mechanical halt threw him forward off the back on bend four, thankfully he too was fit to continue, but the referee awarded it a 1-5 to Workington, putting the Comets two up, 29-31.

It was all square again after a Heat 11 which saw Aarnio fend off the stiff challenge of Bach who had rounded Wilkinson on the opening lap with the 4-2 taking the score to 33-33, but again with Bewley and Jensen passing both Diamonds in Heat 12 to take another away maximum to go four ahead again with three races to go.

Heat 13 saw Aarnio fall heavily on the fourth bend of lap two and was excluded with the Comets awarded a 2-4 a then Bewley took both Morris and Wilkinson to take a match winning three points in Heat 14, the Comets successfully took their second away win in two days.

Newcastle boss said: "Workington are a team never to underestimate as they are trouble even when they're down on power as they proved tonight and with Bach, Jensen, Bewley and Klindt in their side scoring all their points they are never going to be easy. Well done to them, but it means we have a real battle in the second leg later in the summer when we are well and truly the underdogs."
