Tied in the league before the match got under way, the Newcastle "Boiler Technical Services" Diamonds hosting the Scunthorpe Scorpions knew it was going to be a tough match as the visitors came armed with former Newcastle number one, Steve Worrall leading the way, and he was out in Heat One, which Worrall took to pieces with a solid victory over his partner Stefan Nielsen over Lindgren in a 1-5.

Heat Two saw Matthew Wethers crash out on bend three which ended up a 3-3 share in the re-run won by Carl Wilkinson, but the third heat also came to a juddering halt when the two Diamonds were forced win in a tough first bend which saw both fall heavily and Matej Kus take a ride in the ambulance with left leg and knee ligament damage ruling him out of the rest of the meeting.

All four were called back however, with Wilkinson covering as reserve, Jake Allen and Jason Garrity roared ahead of the Diamonds' duo to hit home a solid away 1-5 result pushing their lead to 5-13, the eight point gap remaining after a Heat Four win for Stuart Robson over Josh Auty and Gino Manzares who nipped up past Wethers on the last back straight of the race with the score now 8-16.

Going into the sixth heat the Diamonds were 10 down and nominated a tactical substitute as Robson came out to try to soak up the damage, and indeed he went out to win, initially with Lindgren in second until his chain snapped for the second time on the night on bend four, throwing him to the track allowing a shared heat maintaining the visitors' 10 point advantage.

Garrity found the fast line hard under Robson on bend three in Heat Seven to take up the lead in a Scorpions' 2-4, while Heat Eight was stopped on bend two with Nielsen going down in a very tight bend, but the referee deemed Aarnio had got into bother and caused the Scorpions to fall and excluded the Diamonds from the re-run, in which Nielsen fell again on his own subsequently excluded from the second re-run which ended a 3-2 to Newcastle after Wethers and Manzares passed several times on lap one.

Lindgren shed an unprecedented third chain in Heat 10, as Garrity flew at speed round Wethers to lead an win moving the score on to 22-37, but with Worrall suffering a puncture and Nielsen falling as he was passed by Robson to join Wethers up front, the Diamonds' 5-0 tightened the score to 27-37 with four to go.

Lindgren pulled out of heat 13 after his falls and mechanical nightmares, and with reserve resources getting thin on the ground, it was a 3 rider only heat, which was led from the gate by Worrall with Robson hot on his tail but the Scunthorpe man pulled away in the 2-4 which sealed victory for the visitors after an arduous and fraught meeting, but two final 5-1s to the Diamonds restricted Scunthorpe to three league points.

Team manager George English said: "Scunthorpe were always going to be a thorn in our side as they are a good solid outfit who ride out place well, but to hold them to only defeat us by six when we lost Matej in huis first race and had our number one snap three chains, then we really have to despair and wonder how well we could have beaten Scunthorpe had our nightmare luck been decent instead. The determination was there, but fate turned against us."
