Newcastle Diamonds v Sheffield Tigers
Sunday 14th April 2019, 23:22 UK
LAWRENCE HEPPELL
After two home defeats in two weeks, the home support were wondering just how the Newcastle "Boiler Technical Services" Diamonds would fair against the Sheffield Tigers in their first Championship League meeting of the season, especially as the visitors were led by Danny King, a former Newcastle skipper.

Up to Heat Nine it was as tight throughout, but a final flourish over the last six races saw the home side open up a 14-point win, taking three league points to sit on top on the league table.

After the opening three races in the home side led by an unexpected 12-6 score line, and looking in control before Danny Phillips fell on bend one in the first running of Heat four.

With all four called back, Thomas Jorgensen made a stunning gate to lead and win in a shared heat, while Heat Five was also a shared race with Lasse Bjerre, Danny King and Matthew Wethers all engaged in some excellent speedway, King taking Bjerre for the three points.

Heat Six was a cracking race too with Broc Nicol passing Worrall on the first lap only for Worrall to eventually return the pass on the last lap to share the heat score once again with the score now 21-15 before the Tigers narrowed that by two points after a 2-4 in Heat Seven won by Proctor over Jorgensen.

Nicol took the Eighth with ease over Lambert to tighten up the match again by two, with the score 25-23, and with Nicol coming out again in Heat Nine with Howarth, danger sirens were sounding, but Nicol had forgotten to turn his fuel on, and got pushed off after that start of the race to be excluded for receiving outside assistance while the sides then exchanged 5-1s keeping Newcastle's lead to two points with only four heats to go.

The complexion of the match turned a bright shade of black and white as two solid 5-1s were then hit home in Heats 12 and 13 from a magnificent Clegg win over Bjerre in the 12th over Nicol and then Jorgensen and Worrall over King in the 13th clinching the win before Wethers and Clegg took another home maximum over Proctor top take all league points and go top of Championship league table.

Team manager George English said: "Great win as we hauled back the win over the latter heats of the meeting to pull out a far better win than most people would have dared to believe possible. This does of course prove we're a lot better than the opening matches have suggested, so now we've got our season back on track and continue winning ways."
