Leicester Lions v Newcastle Diamonds
Sunday 28th April 2019, 20:44 UK
A trip to one of the SGB Championship's new boys, the Leicester Lions, led by seven-times British Champion Scott Nicholls was always going to be a tough ask, and so it proved for the Newcastle Diamonds despite providing seven out of the 15 heat winners, however their 11 lasts proved critical

Ellis Perks hit the front for the Lions in Heat One, initially chased by Diamonds' skipper Steve Worrall, but Nicholls whipped up his inside to secure a home maximum, although the first Newcastle heat win came in Heat Two for Max Clegg after a sharp gate taking a huge lead early on, but with Danny Phillips starting off the 15 line for a tape offence at the first ask, left him too far back for points in the shared heat.

Josh Bates hit bend two in Heat Three in third, but rounded both Matthew Wethers and Lasse Bjerre to take the lead in another share while Thomas Jorgensen took the fourth after a superb battle with Richie Worrall the 3-3 took the score to 14-10.

Come the sixth Jorgensen was warned before the re-run for moving at the start, with Perks taking the lead at the second time of asking ahead of Nicholls who worked hard to hold off Jorgensen in a second consecutive home 5-1 extending the Lions' lead to 12 points.

Bjerre and Wethers were on a 1-5 in Heat Seven until Richie Worrall got between them on the second bend and held his two points to the end before Perks took another win in Heat Eight with Connor Mountain keeping Simon Lambert in third for a home maximum as the home lead extended to 31-17.

Two more 3-3s followed before the battle of the Worrall twins in Heat 11 and it was Richie who got the better of Steve off bend four of the opening lap as Jack Thomas held Lambert to the rear in a 4-2 that gave Leicester a 16 point advantage, which turned into an 18 point lead after Bates took the 12th from the gate over Bjerre with Mountain taking third over Clegg.

The return battle of the Worralls in Heat 13 drew the mini-series 1-1 with Steve leaving his brother at the gate to take the three points in another shared race, but with the score now 48-30 with only two races to go, Leicester were already celebrating the win.

Newcastle team manager George English said: "While we got a reasonable share of the heat wins, the 11 last places were a challenge too great to overcome, and if you get last places you can't take any advantage in those heats, so we were lacking strength-in-depth tonight, sad to say."
