Glasgow Tigers v Newcastle Diamonds
Friday 3rd May 2019, 21:55 UK
LAWRENCE HEPPELL
The Newcastle "Boiler Technical Services" Diamonds took the trip to Glasgow last night determined to make amends for an inconsistent start to their Shield challenge, sitting on the bottom of the Borders Group with only one match win to their name, however Glasgow are never a pushover on their own track as Craig Cook's win over Steve Worrall in Heat One's home 4-2 proved.

Heat Two came to a grinding halt however as Danny Phillips hit the first bend fence hard and needed medical treatment, but got to his feet and took a third place in the re-run, won by fellow Diamond Max Clegg and split by Kyle Bickley in a 2-4 to tie the scores 6-6.

Worrall became the second Diamonds' heat winner taking Heat Five well from a solid gate over Rasmus Jensen and Paul Starke who kept Simon Lambert at the back in a shared result, moving the scores on to a tight 16-14, before Lasse Bjerre looked to be on his way to three points in Heat Six, but seemed woefully low on power as Cook then James Sarjeant took him with ease as well as his partner Clegg, although he too appeared to have engine issues to the end of the race with the 5-1 putting six points between the sides.

Bjerre looked to be on a winner in Heat Six but lost power dramatically to end up at the back being passed by Cook and James Sarjeant, then his partner Clegg who also seemed to be enduring engine issues towards the end of the race in a home 5-1 that put six points between the sides which moved up to eight after Heat Eight's 4-2 won by Bickley over Lambert with Sarjeant keeping Phillips at the rear with the scores now 28-20.

Worrall and Bjerre were on a 5-1 early on in Heat Nine until Jensen whipped past Bjerre off bend two to reduce Newcastle's advantage to a 2-4 heat result and pulling the visitors back to within six once more, however Cook and Sarjeant straddled a leading Bjerre in Heat 10 to take the shared 3-3 away turning it into a Glasgow 4-2 restoring their eight-point lead, and to reduce it to six again, Worrall won a brilliant battle with Claus Vissing in Heat 11 for another Newcastle 2-4.

Unfortunately for a battle Newcastle, who had ridden full of spirit, a Heat 13 win for Cook over Worrall with Vissing holding Bjerre at the back, the 4-2 did too much damage as Glasgow took victory, and Newcastle keen for revenge tomorrow night in the return.

Team manager George English said: "While again we only took five heat wins tonight the whole feeling in the side was a more positive one, a more determined one and while we also took a 12-point defeat, there were way more positives to take a hold of. Steve Worrall was in exceptional form and led well from the front for 17 superb points while Lasse Bjerre would have taken more had his not had mechanical issues."
