Newcastle Diamonds v Berwick Bandits
Monday 3rd June 2019, 00:01 UK
LAWRENCE HEPPELL
Berwick "Mike Hope of Wooler Ltd." Bandits (Powered by Clear Energy Consulting) arrived six points ahead in the Cup quarter final to the Newcastle "Boiler Technical Services" Diamonds last night but found their lead hacked to two after Heat One which saw Max Clegg (on a mission for glory) and Steve Worrall roared away ahead of Aaron Summer for a home 5-1 dramatically narrowing the aggregate to 47-49.

Newcastle win on aggregate 99-81 and meet Edinburgh in the semi final

However Berwick hit a problem when well on the way to a 1-5 of their own when Coty Garcia tried a wall-of-death move up the safety fence off bend two, falling and was excluded with the re-run which almost turned into a second home maximum until National League guest David Wallinger (in for Jacob Bukhave who was instructed to race in Germany despite many efforts to cancel his booking) made an error losing a place to the chasing Leon Flint levelling the aggregate 51-51.

Following another 5-1 in Heat Three, and Newcastle now in an aggregate lead, Berwick fought back courtesy of a brilliant Nikolaj Busk Jakobsen win over Thomas Jorgensen in Heat Four, and with Flint keeping Phillips at the back, Berwick's 2-4 tightened the aggregate totals up by two, Newcastle now leading 58-56.

Lasse Bjerre took Heat Five by the scruff of the neck and took the three-point win over Summers in a home 4-2 before Clegg and Worrall hit a second dominant 5-1 in Heat Six over Garcia and Busk Jakobsen who took an uncharacteristic fall on the second bend of the second lap and following a shared 3-3 in the seventh, Newcastle's lead overall moved up to eight points.

Flint took a fine second place in Heat Eight behind Clegg despite the Bandit losing his steel shoe mid-race as the Diamond continued the best night of his 2019 season to date, and that man Clegg was out again in Heat 10 but found himself passed by the hard-riding Berwick guest, Paul Starke (in for the injured Kevin Doolan) as Worrall raced ahead to win with the 4-2 taking the score on the night to 40-20 and on aggregate the Diamonds encroached on and ever-closing victory.

Coming out of the interval Summers took the win in Heat 11 over Jorgensen as Wallinger made an error on the last bend allowing Etheridge through to take a point despite being off the 15 metre mark for a tape offence while Heat 12 saw Bjerre fly out to win and share the heat 3-3.

The killer blow for Berwick came in Heat 13 as Worrall and Jorgensen blasted Summers and Busk Jakobsen apart from the gate to take an easy 5-1, putting the Diamonds through to the semi final against Edinburgh Monarchs, the score on the night being 50-28 and overall 92-76 with two heats to go.

Team manager George English said: "Simply, the Diamonds wanted this so badly and fought hard to get a really well deserved win, and out guest, David Wallinger should have had more points to his name as he rode so well. Max Clegg has come into his own now and proves why we wanted to sign him when others didn't."

Berwick's opposite number, Gary Flint was left to pick up the pieces, adding: "Congratulations to Newcastle on their success, they really upped their game from the Shield match here where we truly dominated them, and maybe this was partly due to the hurt they suffered that night. Either way they did more than what they needed to and caught us out too many times. All the best against Edinburgh guys!"
