Newcastle Diamonds v Redcar Bears
Sunday 15th September 2019, 00:20 UK
In a dress rehearsal for the Knockout Cup Final, the local derby between the BTS Newcastle Diamonds and Redcar Bears took on renewed importance with both sides wanting the psychological advantage heading towards the big one, but the main talking point ended up being an awful crash involving two of the Bears, as Newcastle rolled on to win well.

The opening three heats were tied 3-3, but the first break came in the fourth when Erik Riss shot away to lead from the gate and win well for three points, but with Newcastle guest Tero Aarnio rounding Nathan Greaves for second, the last place to Danny Phillips meant the 2-4 score put Redcar ahead by 11-13, however worryingly three of the four heats had been won by Redcar men.

Heat Five was stopped after Kasper Andersen was deemed to forced Matthew Wethers off his line when he pushed into him from behind, with a three-man re-run called, in which Charles Wright and Wethers put on a brilliant show of racing, the Bear eventually taking the win over Wethers and Lasse Bjerre holding the visitors slender lead.

Worrall passed Riss off bend two in Heat Six to take the win and with Clegg taking third, the 4-2 levelled the match again 18-18, but with Aarnio falling in Heat Seven and Jordan Stewart suffering a puncture, failing to finish, the 3-2 gave a narrow lead to the Diamonds, 21-20 courtesy of Ulrich Ostergaard's win.

Ostergaard took his fourth win of the night in Heat 10 with Worrall basting up past Michael Palm Toft, engaging in a race-long battle, the Diamonds' skipper taking second in the first 5-1 of the night taking the scores to 32-27, while Heat 11's 2-4 narrowed Newcastle's lead to 34-31 as Wright roared ahead of Aarnio.

Heat 12 came to an horrendous crash on the back straight when third placed Palm Toft lifted violently and went down fast, but as Greaves came hurtling along behind with no option but to collide with the stricken Palm Toft. The race was awarded a home 5-1 taking the score to 39-32, but concern was only with the two Redcar Bears who both needed immediate medical attention.

Palm Toft got to his feet remarkably quickly considering the impact he had suffered, but both lads took a ride off to the hospital in the ambulance, and naturally out of the meeting, news came through that Greaves would be awaiting x-rays on a damaged leg while Palm Toft was being investigated to assert the degree of his injuries.

The, after an hour and nine minutes' delay, with the two riders safely in hospital, Heat 13 saw Worrall ease his way past Wright well off the second bend to seal his win in a shared race moving the score on to 42-35 with two heats to go.

Both Ostergaard and Wethers shot round Stewart off bend two of the 14th race to take up the chase behind Riss (in as a tactical substitute) who held his lead, just, in another 3-3 which sealed a home win with one to go as the score was 45-38.

Newcastle team boss, George English said: "First and most importantly we wish the two injured Redcar riders all the very best for a quick recovery after a frightening crash. Tonight it was good to see our skipper really get back to his best form as he led the side with a five ride paid maximum, while Ulrich Ostergaard at reserve is a major force to be reckoned with getting a paid 16 points, so this cup dress rehearsal sets up a cracking Cup Final when we get the dates organised."
