Edinburgh Monarchs v Newcastle Diamonds
Friday 4th October 2019, 21:51 UK
LAWRENCE HEPPELL
With Newcastle utilising two guest riders, the Diamonds went into their last Championship league match of the 2019 season, still keen to make a last-gasp impact and take the win from a stadium where Tyneside teams have had a good record in the past, with American Broc Nicol coming into Heat One for his rider replacement ride, but he took a last place in a heat won by Sam Masters well over Newcastle skipper, Steve Worrall as part of a home 4-2.

Following a Heat two Monarchs' maximum, Ulrich Ostergaard brought Newcastle's travelling fans to life with a dramatic Heat Three win after he and Ricky Wells swapped places over the second lap, but the away three points tied the heat and stopped the home run with the scores set at 12-6, and with Matthew Wethers leading Heat Four, things were looking up until Cameron Heeps overhauled the Diamond on the third bend for another home 4-2, extending the home lead to eight points.

Josh Pickering and Wells took a solid Heat Five 5-1 over Worrall, while Masters and Sarjeant did likewise in the sixth over Wethers and MacDonald taking the score to a worrying 26-10, but Ostergaard was reading a different script as he roared to a great Heat Seven with Nicol following him home for a relieving 1-5 for their own cutting the deficit to 12 points again.

Ostergaard was out again in Heat Eight as the rider-replacement, and took his third straight win of the match but with Clegg falling the remaining three points were vacuumed up by Sarjeant and Connor Coles with the 3-3 still holding 12 points between the sides, 30-18, while Clegg was replaced in Heat Nine by tactical Substitute, Worrall, but the race was stopped when Wethers fell and was excluded from the re-run, in which Worrall won in another shared race with the scores at 33-21.

Masters became the first Monarch to defeat Ostergaard in Heat 10 in a 4-2 which put 14 points between the sides with five races left to run, and with Lawson winning the 11th over Wethers and Heeps after Worrall fell when challenging for the lead on lap three, the 4-2 left the score at 41-25, leaving Newcastle with the task of taking four maximum 1-5s to tie the match, but Pickering's win in Heat 12 over Nicol and Clegg ended the challenge with the score now out of Newcastle's reach with three heats to go.
